Start with a public method description
Palantir's official architecture document describes Forward Deployed Engineering as a way for engineering teams to get closer to specific problems while collaborating with the core engineering team. The document also distinguishes between Foundry's data work, AIP's generative AI capabilities, and Apollo's continuous delivery. This is the manufacturer's explanation of its own methods and architecture, not ChinaOPC's on-site verification of a customer project.
A connection worth looking into is this: Onsite delivery not only handles immediate needs, but also brings recurring issues back to the product team. Small service teams can learn from this type of feedback, but they cannot infer that they already have equivalent product capabilities, staffing, or industry coverage.
Record the work first, then decide which layer to change
The following is the analysis method proposed by ChinaOPC. When encountering a new requirement, first retain the business steps, existing processors, input and output, failure examples, and impact scope. Then distinguish: data mapping that only belongs to this customer, problems that can be solved with existing configurations, and capabilities that are common to multiple projects. Classification is for arranging work, not for automatically deciding product direction for customers.
For example, if a customer writes order status into its own internal coding, it may only need to maintain a mapping table; if multiple customers need to trace who approved the same action, it is worth evaluating common recording capabilities. This example is a method demonstration and is not an internal customer process disclosed by Palantir.
Allow on-site feedback to be reviewed by R&D
An effective piece of feedback should include steps to reproduce, approved desensitization samples, current and expected results, affected versions, temporary processing methods, and business certifiers. Engineers only say "customers urgently need it", which is difficult to help R&D determine the scope of modifications; with reviewable records, only the urgency and subsequent maintenance investment can be compared.
- Customer configuration: who keeps the parameters and how to review them after changes.
- Shared capabilities: who decides what to include in the product and which old items need to be brought back.
- Live patches: when to expire and how to remove them to avoid becoming a long-term branch that no one is responsible for.
- Customer data: only transfer necessary and approved samples, do not copy the original data to other projects.
Small teams need to control the scope of reuse
Reuse is suitable to start with the structure, test methods and operation manual. Customer data, exclusive rules, interface materials and business information cannot be brought into other projects by default just because they can technically be copied. Before delivery, it should be clearly stated which results belong to the customer, which are the original common components, and whether the customer has the conditions for continued use and export.
The public documents do not provide the quotation, construction period and payment information of the project discussed in this article, so a unified income judgment cannot be given. When evaluating FDE work, you can observe whether an on-site problem has a clear repair, verifiable version, and handover record, and then decide to expand the scope of services.
