Progressive FDE Releases: When to Expand and When to Stop

The significance of a small-scale launch is to use comparable results to decide the next step, not just to release a small amount of traffic first. This article refers to Google SRE progressive release materials to discuss how service quality, system errors, and observation windows jointly form promotion conditions, and explains what new data should be protected before rollback. The article is a simulated implementation plan and does not promise that grayscale release can avoid all failures.

Google SRE introduces the ideas of progressive release and comparative evaluation. This article uses it to discuss the deployment of enterprise AI applications. The specific threshold needs to be determined jointly by the customer and the implementer.

The comparison conditions should be as consistent as possible

Simulate the data summary service. The old and new versions use similar tasks and record the input complexity. If the new version only processes simple data, the low error rate obtained will not be meaningful enough for comparison. The test sample and flow range should be determined in advance.

Stop condition contains business error

In addition to response failures, observe lost references, omissions of critical information, and the amount of manual corrections. Pause expansion when the stop condition is triggered, retain problem samples, and do not temporarily relax standards in order to end the release on time.

How to handle confirmation data before rollback

Records generated by the new version may not be suitable for old programs, so compatibility or isolation measures should be designed in advance. By recording the promotion time, configuration and person in charge, customers can understand why it was continued or stopped. This article has not been actually released and cannot be used as proof that any system has passed the online acceptance.
