AI File Uploads: Check Names, Types and Parsing Separately

Just because the uploaded file can be processed by the model does not mean that it is suitable for direct parsing on the server. This article refers to the OWASP file upload guide to discuss the hierarchical design of allowed types, sizes, storage locations and parsing permissions, and explains why you cannot just trust the extension or the type provided by the browser. The goal of the inspection is to reduce risk and control resources, and it cannot be used to claim that any document has been proven safe.

OWASP recommends implementing multi-layer verification for uploads, and a single file type identification cannot constitute a reliable guarantee. The following is the design analysis of ChinaOPC’s AI data tools.

Only receive types that are actually needed by the current business

To simulate the data summary service, first clarify which files, sizes and number of pages are supported. The application generates an internal file identifier, and the original file name is only displayed and does not allow the user to control the server path. Out-of-range files are given clear prompts to avoid endless attempts to parse.

Isolate parsing work from formal services

The file may still contain complex structures after inspection, and the permissions, time, and resources of the parsing process should be limited. Storage is not directly exposed as executable web pages, and downloads should also be checked for access. If the testing service involves external transmission, you need to confirm the data use permission first.

Can resources be cleaned up when the test fails?

Use your own samples to check for corrupted files, abnormal sizes, and parsing timeouts, and confirm that temporary files and task status are handled. Recheck the key samples after updating the parsed dependencies. This article provides design principles and does not replace security testing and ongoing maintenance of specific systems.
