External Documents in AI Workflows: Separate Content from Executable Instructions

Operation requirements appearing in external web pages or files should not automatically become task instructions for the agent. Based on OWASP's description of prompt injection risks, this article discusses how to design data reading, tool permissions, and output verification in layers, and provides controlled testing methods. Just saying "ignore malicious instructions" is not enough to prove security. Business actions still need to be clearly sourced and authorized.

OWASP lists indirect prompt injection from web pages or files as a risk. The following is a protection design analysis and does not provide an operation plan for attacking third-party systems.

Reading data does not obtain operation permission by default.

According to the introduction of the simulation agent organizer supplier, even if the file requires contacting a certain address or uploading credentials, only this paragraph is used as the content to be analyzed. The application separates retrieval from sending and writing tools, and only opens corresponding capabilities when the real user tasks clearly require them.

Tool parameters are checked again by the application

The target address, file path and record number proposed by the model need to be compared with the allowed range. Actions that exceed the scope of the task should be suspended and the reasons should be explained, and the model should not be allowed to declare that it has been authorized.

Validate boundaries in own test material

Using a simulated file that does not contain the real secret, check whether the system carries irrelevant instructions in the file to the execution step. Record failures and corrections, and keep coming back. Prompts, filtering, and permissions each have limitations, and this article does not describe any single measure as completely eliminating prompt injection.
