NLLB-200: Why a Research Translation Model Cannot Simply Become a Commercial Service

The wide language coverage does not mean that any scenario is suitable for direct deployment. Based on the NLLB-200 distilled 600M official model card, this article introduces its low-resource language translation research uses, explains the non-commercial license, short text conditions and document translation restrictions, and provides sample organization methods that can be used during research evaluation to help the team identify usage boundaries before accepting orders.

The Meta Model Card positions NLLB-200 for machine translation research, includes non-commercial license restrictions, and is expressly not intended as a production deployment or certified translation tool. This article is for distilled 600M, and it is not recommended to directly build a paid translation service based on this.

Research samples need to retain language and context

You can use short sentences that you have permission to use, indicate the language, field and manual reference translation, and compare the treatment of proper names, negation and numbers. Research evaluation should involve people who are familiar with the target language, and translations should not be scored solely by another model.

Long articles cannot be simply spliced into reliable files.

Sentence-by-sentence translation may lose reference and cross-paragraph relationships, and the model card also prompts restrictions on input length and document usage. If the study involves long-form material, these limitations should be listed as observations rather than claiming that segmentation will eliminate the problem.

Commercial projects should re-select the authorization path

Whether the weights can be downloaded and whether they can be used for charging services are different issues. Teams should check the license and terms of use of the chosen tool before quoting, and choose a solution with clear commercial authorization if necessary. This article is an introduction to the use of the model and does not constitute certification of any specific translation quality.
